The following is a selection of projects undertaken by MTL, in many different parts of the world.



Afghanistan
  • Provision of a systems analyst to design and implement computer systems for the monitoring of utilisation of donor funds under the UNIDATA programme.
Bangladesh
  • FAO-funded consultancy study to advise on the computerisation of land records and introduction of a pilot land information system for the Department of Land Survey.
  • Consultancy services under ODA's Bangladesh Tea Rehabilitation Project, to advise on the potential for computers within the national tea industry, and to run training courses.
Benin
  • Provision of computer systems for the offices of the Organisation of African Unity.
Bhutan
  • Consultancy services to advise on the computerisation of financial information for the Food Corporation of Bhutan, under an FAO-executed project.
Botswana
  • Provision of a computer specialist to advise on the introduction of computer systems for the management and monitoring of IFAD's Arable Lands Development Programme.
  • Design and management of a computer training course for the Ministry of Agriculture, under the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation.
  • Design, programming and implementation of an animal production simulation and range assessment model for Botswana (APSRAMB), under the national land use planning project for sustainable agricultural development.
Burkina Faso
  • Provision of computer systems for the offices of the Organisation of African Unity.
Cameroon
  • Provision of computer systems for the offices of the Organisation of African Unity.
China
  • Responsible for the design of a computerised project management and reporting system to monitor the progress of tendering and construction at the four hundred sites of the World Bank's Grain Distribution and Marketing Project.
Djibouti
  • FAO-funded consultancy by a specialist to advise on establishment of regional databases, and develop computer systems for gathering and disseminating data relating to Food Security for the six countries of the IGADD region.
Dominican Republic
  • FAO-funded consultancy to advise on vertically integrated information systems for the Dominican dairy sector.
Egypt
  • Systems design work for the Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) of the Cabinet Office, to develop a national food security information and decision support system, using the information engineering methodology.
  • Institutional support to the Agricultural Investment Office to strengthen their services in private sector promotion, including database management, connection to international host databases, and the use of CD-ROMs.
  • Expansion of the services to the Agricultural Investment Office to allow them to provide a full trade information service to farmers and investors in the New Lands.
Ethiopia
  • Supply of an information systems consultant to undertake the design and implementation of improved systems in support of the early warning system of the Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission.
  • Analysis and design of a computerised marketing information system for the Ethiopian Livestock Marketing Project.
  • Provision of consultancy services to FAO's National Soil Service Project on the introduction of computers for soil analysis and the development of a soils database.
Gambia
  • Requirements study for the introduction of computerised banking systems in the Gambia Commercial and Development Bank, including tender design and evaluation.
Guinea
  • Design, testing and installation of micro-computers for highway engineering design on an integrated rural development project.
Guyana
  • Design and management of a computer training course for the Livestock Development Company, under the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation.
Indonesia
  • Design and execution of a series of training courses for senior management and operations staff in the Government's agricultural training unit (AAETE).
  • Consultancy for the installation of a computer system to maintain fingerprint and criminal records for the Indonesian National Police.
Iraq
  • Provision of a computer specialist to FAO's Soils Fertility Project, to computerise data processing and analysis of fertiliser field trials.
  • Provision of a consultant to conduct a systems analysis of computer requirements for national agricultural planning; to draw up a specification of required hardware and software; and then to install the networked systems and provide training to Project staff.
Jamaica
  • Six-month consultancy assignment to the UNCHS (Habitat) Land Titling Project, to develop and implement computer systems for land information, settler accounts, and administration of title.
Kenya
  • Supply of micro-computer programmes for small-farm management and optimisation of feed formulation.
  • Provision of consultancy services to review an existing project and to generate proposals for future project structure and management, on the ODA funded Rural Development Pro-gramme for Arid and Semi-Arid areas.
  • Lesotho Provision of a marketing information systems specialist to the USAID Marketing Assistance Project, to design and install computerised systems.
Malawi
  • Establishment of computer systems at national and sub-national levels for the processing and analysis of the annual crop production surveys.
Morocco
  • Production of land use maps, based on remote sensing and satellite imagery, of the Souss Massa region, as part of an IBRD-funded study.
Mozambique
  • Design and programming of software for the monitoring of agricultural production and food aid imports, under FAO's Food Security Project in the Ministry of Internal Trade.
  • Provision of consultancy and training services for the introduction of a micro-computer-based agricultural information system in the National Directorate of Agrarian Economy.
  • Design and implementation of computer systems for processing data from the crop forecast survey and the crop monitoring reports within the national early warning unit of the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Feasibility study on the integration of food security information flows and the establishment of on-line databases, on behalf of the EU Food Security Technical Unit.
Namibia
  • Consultancy assignment to design and implement a computerised early warning informa-tion system for the FAO/UNDP National Early Warning Project.
Nepal
  • Provision of the consultancy services of a Geographic Information Systems Specialist on the ADB's National Land Use Planning Project.
Nigeria
  • Installation of management, stock control and payroll systems, and training of all levels of staff for the Kano State Rural Development Project and the Kano Agricultural Supply Company.
  • Provision of micro-computers, development of a standard reporting system for crop production, and training of staff in the Federal Department of Agricultural Planning.
North Korea
  • Consultancy mission to introduce computerised systems for the analysis of national soil trials and for the generation of fertiliser recommendations, on behalf of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
Pakistan
  • Introduction of computer systems to maintain a national seeds variety databank; and management of a training course for staff in the UK.
Romania
  • Design and implementation of information systems for the EU PHARE project for Development of Agribusiness Consultancy Services, in the areas of business management, market liberalisation and privatisation.
Somalia
  • FAO-funded consultancy to redevelop the existing Grain Price Reporting System to a more flexible computerised Market Price Reporting System, including provision of staff training on the new programs.
Sri Lanka
  • IBRD-funded computerisation study of Janatha Estates Development Board, to advise on the introduction of information systems for this national plantations corporation.
Sudan
  • Co-ordination, program design and installation of computer systems for an ODA-funded regional development project in Darfur, and training of senior project staff.
  • Provision of a Senior Systems Analyst for a series of missions to the FAO/UNDP National Early Warning Project, to assist with the design and development of a computerised infor-mation system.
  • Input of a Management Information Systems consultant to the IBRD-financed Food Security Coordination Unit, responsible for the design of databases and computer networks.
Swaziland
  • Computer systems development consultancy for accounting, stock control and marketing functions within the Swaziland Dairy Board. A systems analysis was followed by implementation assistance, training and subsequent supervisory visits.
  • Consultancy study on the development of an information system for the UNDP-funded Marketing Advisory Unit in the Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Development of a suite of computer programs for marketing information at the wholesale market run by the IFAD-funded National Agricultural Marketing Board.
Syria
  • Consultancy services to improve computer use in the production of extension materials, and to establish an MIS for the monitoring of national extension activities.
Tanzania
  • Installation of a micro-computer system for farm survey data processing and regional resource management on an EDF-funded Regional Development Project.
  • Consultancy study to develop a coherent strategy for computerisation in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development; and to implement systems for sectoral planning.
  • Design and development of computerised systems for project monitoring and input price control in the IBRD-funded Project Preparation and Monitoring Bureau.
  • Systems analysis and design of computer facilities for the Crop Monitoring and Early Warning Unit in the Food Security Department, including staff training.
Thailand
  • Provision of a team of agricultural database design and analysis consultants, to develop a decision support system for UNDP's agricultural diversification programme in the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
  • Consultancy work to design a management information system and to improve the effectiveness of computers at the Government's Agricultural Reform Office.
  • Programming and installation of computer programmes for the evaluation of training courses run by FAO's Regional Seeds Project.
  • Project Preparation Mission for FAO to define a project to strengthen the management of the national Seed Division through the more efficient use of existing computer resources.
Tonga
  • Design of a computerised trade information system for the national trade promotion agency, TongaTrade, including the development of in-house databases, Internet access, and on-line hosts.
  • Design of computer and communications systems as part of the ADB project for institutional strengthening of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, including financial accounting, extension management and M&E.
Uganda
  • Introduction of micro-computer systems for planning, accounting and MIS in the Uganda Commercial Bank's Agricultural Rehabilitation Project.
  • Introduction of computer systems for the Department of Fisheries, including software development and staff training.
  • Provision of Herd Recording Specialist for two years on the AfDB-funded Dairy Development Project, to develop and implement computerised information systems.
  • USA Review, on behalf of FAO, of all micro-computer-based geographic information systems and recommendations for GIS selection on their overseas projects.
Windward Islands
  • Provision of consultancy services on the EU-funded Restructuring of the Windward Islands Banana Industry project, undertaking the design and implementation of an improved MIS covering extension management, grower management, financial accounting and inventory control.
Yemen
  • Consultancy and training assignment, with FAO funding, to strengthen the use of computers for national agricultural research.
Zambia
  • Supply of micro-computer systems for project management, accounting and farm survey data processing on an ODA-funded integrated development project.
  • Provision of a computer systems analyst to Zambia's Agricultural Research and Extension Project, to advise on the use of computers in the Research Branch of the Department of Agriculture.
  • EEC-funded consultancy to design and develop a computerised system for the financial monitoring of European Community funded development projects in Zambia.
  • Provision of consultancy services to develop an MIS for the monitoring and evaluation of the World Bank's Agricultural Sector Investment Programme.
Zimbabwe
  • Input of the Lead Consultant to head a preliminary mission to Zimbabwe to prepare a project under SADC's Food Security Programme and to formulate a strategy for the development of regional and national databases of food security information.
  • Provision of an MIS Consultant to provide design and develop the computer systems required for GIS and project management within AGRITEX.
  • FAO-funded technical assistance consultancy to advise the Economics & Markets Branch of MLARR on the setting up and maintenance of a national agricultural database, includ-ing procurement of equipment and training of staff.
  • Supply of a Computer/Communications Consultant to the DANIDA-funded Regional Early Warning Systems Project, based in Harare but covering all ten national early warning units in the SADC region.
  • Design and presentation of computer modules for the Regional Training Programme of the SADC Food Security and Technical Assistance Unit.
